What is A Normal Blood Sugar Level?

Are you someone with blood sugar problems?
Or are you someone who has been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or type-2 diabetes?
Or are your blood sugar levels under control?
In my opinion, whatever your condition is, it's really important to learn a few things about normal blood sugar level, what is a normal blood sugar level and how blood sugar levels affects your body.
In this matter, I'd like to introduce Glucose and Insulin as the main roles.
Glucose will enter our body through foods which are carbohydrates-rich and it likes to travel through the body's blood stream (Our body needs carbohydrates as source of energy).
On the other hand, Insulin has a significant job to regulate the glucose levels in the blood stream by managing the process of glucose absorption by the cells. Insulin is coming from pancreas. That's why if there's some troubles with the pancreas so that it fails to do its job to produce insulin, you better be prepared to have problems with your blood glucose levels. It is because it affects the breakdown process of glucose and leads to abnormal rise in blood sugar levels. This condition is known as type-1 diabetes.
What if the pancreas is fine and insulin is normally produced but the body won’t respond to the insulin? You’re right; it’s also possibly happened to cause increasing level of blood sugar and known as type-2 diabetes (insulin resistance).
Blood sugar level will vary or not constant. It will change during the day depending on some factors, like the daily activities, recent meal consumption and the time when the blood sample was taken.
Blood sugar level will reach the lowest value when you wake up in the morning and will not reach the normal level till you eat something that day. After you eat food, your blood sugar level will rise.
The next question that maybe coming up is; what are normal blood sugar levels?
Actually there are two blood sugar levels; Fasting Blood Sugar and Postprandial Blood Sugar.
Normal fasting blood sugar level ranges between 70-100 mg/dL.
Normal postprandial blood sugar level is below 140 mg/dL.
Blood sugar levels of someone who does not eat will decrease and fall below the range. It can result further serious condition. Someone whose blood sugar level fall below 70 mg will be considered as hypoglycemia which symptoms are; difficulty in focusing, sudden lack of energy and irritability.
However, even if you don't have diabetes, your blood sugar levels will go up and down throughout the day. It will rise when you eat food or get stressed up and will come down when you exercise or relax. So don't worry if your blood sugar level reaches 160 mG/dL even if you don't have diabetes.
So, when should I aware with my blood sugar levels? The answer is when it goes over 200 mg/dL. All you have to do is check your blood sugar once again and consult immediately to the doctor.
The scary part of having high blood sugar level is; it may lead to diabetes which can cause further serious complications such as;
- Nerve disorders
- Blindness
- Damage to kidney
- Heart disease/heart failure
- Cardiovascular disease
- High blood pressure and stroke
- The worst case is amputation
